NHS BLOOD BOTTLE SHORTAGE

There is currently a national blood bottle shortage in the NHS. This a national issue and we have been advised by NHS England as to what blood tests we are allowed to undertake. This is something that is outside of the practice’s control.

We will make every effort to manage your health give the current blood bottle shortages, but at present we are only allowed to undertake urgent blood tests in the following circumstances:

· Where they are required to facilitate a two week wait cancer referral
· Where tests are extremely overdue and/or essential for safe prescribing of medication or monitoring of conditions
· That if taken could avoid a hospital admission or prevent an onward referral
· For those patients with suspected sepsis or conditions with a risk of death or disability.

If you have an appointment booked for a routine blood test such as long term condition monitoring then we will be contacting you if this needs to be postponed. NHS England are hoping that supply will resume by the end of September.

DELAY TO FLU VACCINATION DELIVERIES

The main supplier of flu vaccinations to the NHS, Seqirus, has just notified GP practices across the country that there will be a one to two week delay to their planned delivery. They are only providing GP practices with 7 days’ notice of when we will receive flu vaccinations which makes it very difficult for us to plan our flu vaccination clinics at this time.

We are now expecting our flu vaccinations to be delivered in October and as soon as we know the date they are arriving we will put on clinics for you to book in to. We apologise for the inconvenience but this is a national issue and is beyond control.

Better Health

Public Health England has launched a major new adult health campaign to seize the opportunity for a national reset moment.

COVID-19 has affected the whole country; for almost everyone, life has had to fundamentally change. But it has also prompted many people to reflect and think more seriously about their health.

Nearly two thirds (63%) of adults in the UK are overweight or living with obesity. Gaining weight is often a gradual process that takes place over a number of years and modern life doesn’t always make it easy. This extra weight causes pressure to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and now COVID-19. By reducing your weight within a healthy range, you can help cut your risk of being critically ill with COVID-19.

Stop Smoking

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you'll ever do for your health.

When you stop, you give your lungs the chance to repair and you'll be able to breathe easier. There are lots of other benefits too - and they start almost immediately.

It's never too late to quit. Let's do this!

The F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) acronym is effective in driving calls to 999 for stroke, saving lives and reducing disability. It also provides a simple test to help people identify the most common signs of a stroke:

  • Face – has their face fallen on one side? Can they smile?
  • Arms – can they raise both arms and keep them there?
  • Speech – is their speech slurred?
  • Time to call 999 if you see any one of these signs of a stroke

When Stroke Strikes Act F.A.S.T. Call 999

The Institute of General Practice Management has launched a campaign to raise awareness of some of the abuse our teams face every day. While most patients are polite and courteous, our teams are having to deal with abuse daily and the abuse must stop. Featured on 5Live and BBC Breakfast, hopefully this will make some people think twice.

Green Doctor

Who are Green Doctor?

Green Doctor is a service run by Groundwork, a group of charities working across the UK to respond to the needs of local communities and tackle fuel poverty.

We are trained energy-efficiency experts who provide vulnerable residents with advice and support in their own home, over the telephone, or by way of workshop events. We help them make savings on their energy, water, and money to live more comfortably and reduce their environmental impact. What’s more, we’re experts at working with vulnerable people in their own homes and in the community. And because we believe in empowering residents, our service is geared towards supporting and enabling them to take control of their utility bills.

Please see the attached link for more detailed information on this service.
